CV NEWS FEED // US Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss) has issued a statement slamming the Right to Contraception Act (S.4381) proposed by Senate Democrats that she says tramples on religious freedoms and parental rights of many Americans.
The bill failed to pass, leading Democrat senators to accuse Republicans of being “opposed” to contraception.
Hyde-Smith wrote in her June 5 statement following the proposal that the legislation, while appearing to center on contraception, does not actually advance access to pregnancy prevention.
“It’s ‘show-vote’ season in the Senate,” Hyde-Smith stated. “This is another example of Democrats bringing forward deeply deceptive legislation to make political points and try to offer cover to vulnerable Democrats.”
Hyde-Smith continued:
The devil is in the details. This bill isn’t about access to contraception. It’s about pouring more taxpayer dollars to abortion purveyors like Planned Parenthood, while further trampling religious freedoms and parental rights.
The Senator further noted that the bill would “codify” punitive measures for faith-based providers and organizations that do not support abortion or contraception.
The Senator also signed a joint statement published on June 4, which calls out Democrat proponents of the Act for allegedly attempting to mislead Americans. The statement points out that contraception is legal in every state and protected by laws which require health insurance agencies to provide it at no cost.
“There is no real threat to access to contraception,” the statement reads. “It’s disgusting that Democrats are fearmongering on this important issue to score cheap political points.”
The statement continued:
This bill infringes on the parental rights and religious liberties of some Americans and lets the federal government force religious institutions and schools, even public elementary schools, to offer contraception like condoms to little kids.
It’s just another way for Democrats to use activist attorneys and our courts to advance their radical agenda and that is why we oppose this bill.
Hyde-Smith was joined by 20 other Republican Senators led by Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla) in signing the statement.
