Study: United States abortion laws among top 8% most permissive in world

CV NEWS FEED // A recent study by the Charlotte Lozier Institute that compared gestational limits on abortion in different United Nations countries found that the United States is among the top 8% most permissive countries in the world in regards to abortion laws.

According to the report, only eight countries out of 193 in the U.N. do not have federal restrictions on abortion. One of those countries is the U.S., putting it on the same level as China, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and Guinea-Bissau.

The report also found that only 14 other countries in the U.N. besides the U.S. allow abortion on demand after 15 weeks of pregnancy, which has been proven to be the point when a developing baby can feel pain, if not before then.

The majority of countries in the U.N. (123) do not allow women to have abortions without specific reasons. In some countries, abortions are only performed to save the life of the mother, while in others, abortions are performed based on “socioeconomic grounds.”

The remaining 70 countries allow abortion without restrictions on the reason for obtaining one, but 55 countries have limits on when in the pregnancy the abortion can be performed.

Within the U.S., 29 states and Washington, D.C. currently allow abortion on demand past 15 weeks of pregnancy. The report added that “in at least 19 states, abortion drug prescribers are shielded from legal repercussions if they ship abortion pills into those states that restrict abortion from conception and/or that have health and safety requirements that apply to abortion-inducing drugs.”

“The United States should seek to move away from the ultra-permissive fringe policies of the 14 other countries that permit abortion past 15 weeks and aim to protect life at even earlier gestational limits, as 178 other U.N member countries do—ranging from complete protection of the unborn to protecting the unborn after 15 weeks of gestation,” the report added.

According to CNA, Charlotte Lozier Institute Research Associate Mia Steupert said that “while pro-abortion activists disparage heartbeat protection laws, like in Florida, they turn a blind eye to the real global extremism in our own country.”

“We should be an international leader when it comes to the human right to life, but instead we are one of eight countries in the United Nations that allows abortion on demand without any gestational limits,” she told CNA, adding that the U.S. is now “a global outlier in a shared category with human rights abusers like China and Vietnam.”

“This reality should alarm Americans and motivate them to protect life and push back against the radical, pro-abortion lobby that has infested our culture,” Steupert concluded.
