Indiana teenager arrested after vandalizing Catholic school chapel with LGBT graffiti

CV NEWS FEED // Indiana police arrested a 16-year-old boy who vandalized the outside of a local Catholic high school’s chapel with LGBT graffiti, according to the Lafayette Journal and Courier.

The vandalism took place for the first time in the afternoon May 1 at Central Catholic High School in Lafayette, Indiana.

Several hours after school officials covered up the graffiti with plywood, the vandal returned and spray painted more graffiti over the plywood that read “Queer Lives Matter” and “God loves trans kids too,” the police stated to Journal and Courier.

Journal and Courier added, “The vandalism included inverted crosses spray painted on the chapel’s stained-glass windows, according to police reports.”

The police stated to Courier and Journal that they located the vandal using a license plate number and arrested him at a home around 6:45 p.m. He was taken to a juvenile detention center and was later released to a parent.

President of Pride Lafayette Ashley Smith told Journal and Courier in a statement that the pro-LGBT organization does not condone the actions or behavior in any way.

“This act was nothing but criminal,” Smith stated, adding that the organization “[finds] this reprehensible. Someone is clearly trying to divide the community, more so than we are as a society. This individual clearly needs some guidance.”

She also expressed sorrow that the Catholic school encountered the issue.

“We have offered our help in cleaning this up,” Smith concluded. “We are all neighbors and part of the same greater community.”

According to CatholicVote’s Violence Tracker, over 400 attacks and vandalisms against Catholic churches in the United States have occurred since May of 2020.
