CV NEWS FEED // A Monday op-ed in The Washington Times charged leftist American “progressives” with hypocrisy – as they claim to oppose “foreign influence in elections” while simultaneously receiving hundreds of millions from foreign billionaire donors.
The Times piece also mentions many progressives’ support for controversial policies aimed at expanding “voting rights” to non-citizens.
“Even as liberals rail against foreign influence in elections, progressive groups are cashing in on at least $500 million in funds from a secretive foreign billionaire named Hansjorg Wyss,” authors Jason Snead and Paul Teller wrote in the op-ed.
“Armed with these funds, the Arabella Advisors network and other groups have run ads supporting the Biden climate agenda, financed former Attorney General Eric Holder’s litigation, and gerrymandered House seats for Democrats,” Snead and Teller explained.
The authors wrote that almost a quarter of a billion dollars from Wyss
have landed in the coffers of the Sixteen Thirty Fund, which is one the largest donors to left-wing ballot measures across the country. A recent report from the nonpartisan watchdog group Americans for Public Trust reveals this foreign-funded juggernaut has spent nearly $100 million on ballot issue campaigns in 25 states pushing abortion, tax increases and election law rewrites intended to give Democrats a partisan edge.
According to his website, Wyss, 88, currently lives in Wyoming. However, he retains his Swiss citizenship. Multiple reports seem to imply that he is not an American citizen.
The New York Times’ Kenneth P. Vogel and Katie Robertson noted in April 2021: “It is not clear if Mr. Wyss has U.S. citizenship. In a 2014 speech reported by the Swiss news outlet Blick, [Wyss] said that he carried only a Swiss passport and did not have a U.S. green card.”
“It is illegal for foreign nationals without green cards to contribute directly to U.S. political campaigns, but they are permitted to give to groups that seek to influence public policy,” Vogel and Robertson added.
The Times journalists described that as a result, the billionaire “became a member of the Democracy Alliance, a club of liberal donors, as well as the board of the Center for American Progress, a Washington think tank that got its start with support from Democracy Alliance donors.”
In a May 2021 Times piece written by Vogel, the journalist indicated that Wyss “has not disclosed publicly whether he holds citizenship or permanent residency in the United States.”
Also in the same article, Vogel called Wyss “a leading source of difficult-to-trace money to groups associated with Democrats.”

Also in their op-ed, Snead and Teller wrote that “liberal activists across the country are working hard to normalize noncitizen voting, to astounding effect.”
“In the last two years, New York City and the District of Columbia have passed laws to enfranchise anyone living within their borders,” they stated. “New York’s law remains bottled up in court, but in our nation’s capital, officials are elected with the votes of illegal immigrants and embassy staff working for Russia and China.”
In late March, CatholicVote reported that the Democratic-dominated New York City Council
petitioned the New York State Court of Appeals to unblock a controversial law that would give non-citizens the ability to vote in the Big Apple’s elections.
The New York Post reported that the law in question was “struck down as unconstitutional last month by an appellate court.”
The legislation was “passed by the City Council in late 2021 and signed into law by then-Mayor Bill de Blasio,” the Post added. The law “would have allowed 800,000 noncitizens with green cards to vote.”

CatholicVote Director of Governmental Affairs Tom McClusky said that leftist policies allowing migrants to vote is “how elections are stolen.”
“The Democrats make it easy for those who entered the country illegally to also register to vote, another illegality,” McClusky stated.
“You want to know why the Biden administration and Democrats aren’t doing anything to stop the border crisis and protect American citizens?” he asked. “Because they profit from it.”
