Movies of ‘hope, courage, and recognizing our common humanity’: celebrating this year’s Christopher Award-winning films

CV NEWS FEED // The winners of this year’s 75th annual Christopher Awards, celebrating “resilience, faith, and our ‘better angels,” have been announced.

According to an April 10 release from The Christophers, “themes of hope, courage, and recognizing our common humanity run through the 23 films, TV programs, and books for adults and young people being honored,” by the award foundation.

Among the TV, Cable, and Streaming categories is ABC News’ After the Blast: The Will to Survive, which documents the story of correspondent Bob Woodruff as he returns to Iraq, “where he suffered a traumatic brain injury in a roadside bombing 20 years ago, to share his journey toward recovery and healing, and his mission to support wounded veterans.”

Renowned documentarian Ken Burns also received his 11th Christopher Award for The American Buffalo (PBS), “which recounts the ways that our national mammal, long sacred to Native Americans, found new life through conservation efforts from a diverse group of Americans.”

Among the Feature Films honored by The Christophers is the biopic film, A Million Miles Away, which portrays the story of José M. Hernandez, an immigrant farm worker who becomes a NASA astronaut and travels to space.

In addition, one of the Books for Adults honored this year is Stephanie Saldaña’s What We Remember Will Be Saved—which introduces readers to refugees from wars in Iraq and Syria, and “how they are keeping their culture alive in their new countries, and how they maintain kindness towards others despite their losses and hardships.”

The Christopher awards celebrate contemporary artists such as writers, filmmakers, and illustrators whose work “affirms the highest values of the human spirit,” reflecting the motto of the awards: “It’s better to light one candle than to curse the darkness.”

The Christophers is a nonprofit foundation, founded in 1945, which is “rooted in the Judeo-Chrisitan tradition of service to God and humanity.”
