Catholic analyst: bad Church news isn’t the only Church news

CV NEWS FEED // Bad news is not the only news for the Catholic Church in America according to Catholic analyst and Senior Fellow at the DC-based Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) George Weigel.

In a First Things article published last month, Weigel, well known St. John Paul II’s biographer, challenges the position adopted by Italian historian Robertero de Matteri that the modern Catholic Church “appears as a wasteland.”

“To be sure,” Weigel writes of the Church in the US, “ours is a chiaroscuro landscape, with both shadows and light. But a wasteland? I think not.”

According to Weigel, seminaries in the US “are in better shape than they’ve ever been,” with Pope Saint John Paul II reforms now deeply rooted across the country. “Seminary rectors and formators in many North Atlantic countries marvel at what they see here and hope to imitate it,” he added.

Furthermore, despite the current struggle to preserve the original Catholic identities of many US institutes of higher education, Weigel pointed out the existence of several that “are set firmly on the path of ever-deeper conversion to Christ.”

Among these, he lists Thomas Aquinas College, Belmont Abbey College, Benedictine College, the Catholic University of America, Christendom College, the University of Dallas, the Franciscan University of Steubenville, the University of Mary.

“Give up Catholic bad-news mongering,” Weigel wrote, encouraging the faithful instead “to reflect on how well the Church today is living the Great Commission to make disciples of all nations.”

He concluded: “The Holy Spirit is animating good things among us. They should be celebrated and supported.”
