My Favorite Easter Quote

He is Risen!

Alleluia!

This Easter morning, all of our work and all the drudgery of the year takes a back seat as we praise our Risen Lord.

What could possibly bring us more joy than knowing that sin and death have been smashed?

That He makes all things new.

I’m reminded again this Easter Sunday of the encouraging words of Pope St. John Paul II in an Easter homily.

“We do not pretend that life is all beauty. We are aware of darkness and sin, of poverty and pain,” he said:

But we know Jesus has conquered sin and passed through his own pain to the glory of the Resurrection. And we live in the light of his Paschal Mystery – the mystery of his Death and Resurrection. “We are an Easter People and Alleluia is our song!”

Today we set aside our labors. Our work – even our best work – can wait.

What we do only makes sense because of the transformational saving act of Jesus Christ that we celebrate today.

John Paul II said in the same homily:

We are not looking for a shallow joy but rather a joy that comes from faith, that grows through unselfish love, that respects the “fundamental duty of love of neighbor, without which it would be unbecoming to speak of Joy.” We realize that joy is demanding; it demands unselfishness; it demands a readiness to say with Mary: “Be it done unto me according to thy word.”

Catholics have every reason to be on the alert, to defend our beliefs, and not to expect an easy go of it.

We don’t kid ourselves that we have no enemies and that there are still many battles ahead.

But my hope is that we remember for the rest of the year (and every year!) that our joy-filled worship of the Risen Lord should be present in our minds at every moment.

He has given us new life by His Death and Resurrection.

He came to save our broken world. And won.

He is Risen! And Alleluia!
