CV NEWS FEED // Catholics blasted a gift shop in a Milwaukee suburb that has been selling “votive candles” featuring pop singer Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce dressed as Mary and Jesus.
Mixed Bag MKE of Whitefish Bay, WI, hosted a “Swiftie Super Bowl Eve Party” on Saturday, per the store’s Facebook page.
The page’s cover photo showed candles featuring the images of Swift and Kelce. One pair of candles appeared to depict Swift wearing a blue veil with an image of the Immaculate Heart of Mary superimposed on her chest.
The other candles seemed to show Kelce dressed as Jesus, the Good Shepherd.
“Celebrate Taylor’s first Super Bowl a day early with Mixed Bag! Music, snacks, discounts and free friendship bracelets while supplies last!” read the five-hour event’s description.
The party was held one day before Kelce’s Chiefs defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.
The store doubled down on its decision to sell the controversial candles despite widespread backlash from Catholics.
“If you’re part of this group, and you see this, please know you aren’t changing anything by this harassment,” Mixed Bag MKE wrote on Facebook. “I will still sell these candles and I don’t care if you think it’s sacrilegious.”
The small business even posted some Facebook direct messages (DMs) Catholics sent them.
One Facebook user stated via DM:
I just learned of your disgusting celebrity “prayer candles.” Depicting immoral celebrities instead of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Holy Mother. How low can you go?
Another Catholic who sent a DM petitioned the store to “[p]lease stop selling the blasphemous candles with celebrities!!!”
“I truly take offense by mocking my faith!” the person stressed.
FOX Business noted:
Despite all the uproar, the store posted it had one of its busiest days ever, sharing a picture of nearly empty shelves that once held the Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce candles after less than two hours of opening.
>> POLL: 18% OF VOTERS LIKELY TO BACK WHOEVER TAYLOR SWIFT ENDORSES IN 2024 <<
Swift is widely considered one of the most popular, influential, and well-known celebrities in the world today. In addition, surveys suggest that her influence could expand beyond the musical realm.
According to a Newsweek poll from last month, 18% of voters “say they’re ‘more likely’ or ‘significantly more likely’” to back a 2024 presidential candidate if Swift endorses the politician.
As of Tuesday, February 13, Swift has yet to make an endorsement in the race. Many speculate that she will endorse President Joe Biden for re-election. Swift endorsed Biden’s campaign against then-incumbent President Donald Trump in 2020.
For the past few years, Swift has been a vocal proponent of legalized abortion, the LGBTQ movement, and other left-wing causes.
As CatholicVote previously reported:
On June 24, 2022, the day the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, she took to X (then known as Twitter) to write that she was “terrified.”
‘[A]fter so many decades of people fighting for women’s rights to their own bodies, today’s decision has stripped us of that,” Swift wrote. She reposted a statement from former Democratic First Lady Michelle Obama.
