Saint of the Day: Saint John Joseph of the Cross

Saint John Joseph of the Cross was a humble Franciscan priest known for his deep prayer, simplicity, and love for the Cross of Christ. He was born in 1654 on the island of Ischia in Italy and was given the name Carlo Gaetano Calosirto.

At a young age he felt called to religious life and joined the Franciscan reform movement inspired by the spirit of Saint Peter of Alcantara. When he entered religious life, he took the name John Joseph of the Cross to express his desire to live in union with the suffering Christ.

Saint John Joseph lived a life of great humility and penance. He was known for his obedience, charity toward others, and deep contemplation. Even when he became a superior and later a master of novices, he continued to live simply and serve the brothers with kindness and patience.

Many people came to him for spiritual advice because of his wisdom and holiness. His life reminds us that true greatness in the Church comes not from status but from humility, prayer, and love for God.

He died peacefully in 1739 and was later canonized for his holy life and devotion to Christ.
