Texas Catholic schools say new tuition voucher program makes education more accessible

Administration from Catholic schools in Corpus Christi, Texas, are expressing gratitude for the state’s new tuition voucher program, which they say will relieve burdens on Catholic school families and create opportunities for more students to join the schools.

The Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) program was passed by the Texas Senate in 2025 and will go into effect for the 2026–27 school year, KRISTV reports. The program provides students with up to $10,474 and up to $30,000 for students with disabilities. It also offers financial assistance — up to $2,000 — for homeschooled students.

Rebecca Hammel, superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Corpus Christi, told KRISTV that the program will help families who are already enrolled in Catholic schools with an education savings account.

TEFA, she said, will also create more opportunities for families who are interested in a Catholic education but were previously unable to enroll their children due to financial reasons.

She added that school administrators are encouraging potential families to apply early for TEFA.

Hammel said that families who apply early have a great chance of receiving the voucher, adding, “We want to show the state legislators the demand for the program so that potentially funding can be increased.”

Registration for TEFA opens on Feb. 4 and closes March 17.
