Sarah Hurm, a mother of four, told thousands of pro-life advocates on Jan. 23 that she is “living proof that life is a gift,” recounting how she reversed a chemical abortion after experiencing regret and finding medical and emotional support from advocates outside an abortion clinic.
Hurm shared her story as participants gathered for the annual March for Life, describing how she felt pressured to end her pregnancy after learning she was expecting her fourth child.
“When I discovered I was pregnant with my fourth child, the father told me I wasn’t ready,” Hurm said. “His harsh, judgemental words made me feel trapped and alone.”
Hurm said the father told her, “26 years old, four kids, three different dads,” adding that it “didn’t look good.” She said the comment led her to contact an abortion clinic.
She scheduled a chemical abortion after being told by clinic staff that counseling was not available and that her only option was to proceed with the procedure. During an ultrasound, she recalled being told that a strong fetal heartbeat was detected.
During the ultrasound, Hurm said a clinic worker told her, “You are lucky the heartbeat bill hadn’t passed.” She described the moment as one she will never forget.
“These words should remind us all that our work in the pro-life movement has real impact” she said.
After taking the first abortion pill, Hurm said she immediately regretted her decision and began searching for alternatives. She said she found a hotline for abortion pill reversal and was connected with a doctor willing to provide care.
“I realized I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t without options,” Hurm said. “ I could fight for my child’s life. And so I did.”
Hurm said she underwent treatment intended to counteract the effects of the chemical abortion and later gave birth to a healthy son in January 2019.
“He continues to thrive,” she said. “I am here to tell you that the abortion pill reversal can work. My life and the life of my son is living proof today.”
Pro-life advocates point to stories like Hurm’s as evidence that laws protecting unborn life and expanding support for pregnant women can have real-world impact. Hurm criticized efforts in some states to restrict abortion pill reversal and warned that abortion pills are increasingly provided for use at home without direct medical supervision.
She also contrasted the care she later received from pro-life advocates with her experience at the abortion clinic, which she said treated her like a “transaction.”
Hurm urged supporters to see pro-life work as concrete acts of accompaniment.
“Saving a life can be as simple as answering a phone call, driving a friend to an ultrasound, or helping her pick out a car seat.” she said.
“Small sacrifices can become enormous victories that can support moms like me and children like mine,” Hurm said. “You have that power. Be that person who connects a woman to hope. be the reason she knows she’s not alone.”
As marchers prepared to walk through the nation’s capital, Hurm closed by calling on attendees to be the “living proof” that life is a gift.
