Saint of the Day: Saint Hilary of Poitiers (c. 310–367)

Bishop and Doctor of the Church

Saint Hilary of Poitiers is honored as one of the great defenders of the Catholic faith and a Doctor of the Church, known especially for his courageous defense of the divinity of Christ.

Born into a pagan family in Gaul (modern-day France), Hilary came to know Christ through the study of Sacred Scripture. Deeply moved by the truth of the Gospel, he embraced Christianity as an adult and was later chosen as Bishop of Poitiers due to his holiness and wisdom.

During his episcopate, the Church was troubled by the Arian heresy, which denied that Jesus Christ is truly God. Saint Hilary fearlessly defended the true teaching of the Church—that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man, equal to the Father. Because of his faithfulness, he was exiled for several years, suffering greatly for the truth.

While in exile, Saint Hilary continued to write theological works that strengthened the Church, including important teachings on the Holy Trinity. His clarity of thought and unwavering faith earned him the title “Hammer of the Arians.”

After returning from exile, he continued to shepherd his flock with love and courage until his death. In 1851, the Church proclaimed him a Doctor of the Church, recognizing his lasting contribution to Catholic doctrine.

Saint Hilary reminds us to remain faithful to Christ and His Church, even when defending the truth comes at a personal cost.
