Saint of the Day: St. Stephen, the First Christian Martyr

On the day after Christmas, the Church turns our eyes from the manger to the cross by honoring St. Stephen, the first Christian martyr. His feast reminds us that the Child born in Bethlehem came to save the world through sacrifice, and that following Christ often requires courage and faithfulness.

St. Stephen appears in the Acts of the Apostles as one of the first deacons chosen by the early Church. He was selected not only for his service to the poor but also for his deep faith, wisdom, and fullness of the Holy Spirit. Through him, God worked signs and wonders among the people.

When Stephen boldly preached that Jesus was the promised Messiah, he faced fierce opposition. Filled with the Holy Spirit, he spoke with clarity and truth, recounting God’s saving plan throughout history and proclaiming Christ as the Righteous One. His words pierced the hearts of his listeners—but instead of repentance, they responded with anger.

As Stephen was condemned, Scripture tells us that he gazed into heaven and saw Jesus standing at the right hand of the Father. Even in the moment of death, his heart was filled not with hatred, but with mercy. Like Christ on the Cross, Stephen prayed:

“Lord Jesus, receive my spirit,”
and,
“Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”

Among those who witnessed his martyrdom was Saul, who would later become St. Paul the Apostle—a powerful reminder that Stephen’s witness bore fruit far beyond what could be seen at the moment.

St. Stephen teaches us that Christmas is not only about joy and light, but also about living the truth of Christ with courage, forgiveness, and love, even when it is difficult.

Prayer to St. Stephen

St. Stephen, faithful witness of Christ,
teach us to follow Jesus with brave and loving hearts.
Help us to forgive as we have been forgiven
and to remain faithful to the Gospel in every trial.

As we celebrate the birth of our Savior,
may we live as true disciples of Christ,
bearing His light to the world.
Amen.
