On December 7, the Church honors Saint Ambrose, one of the great Doctors of the Church and one of the most powerful Catholic voices of the 4th century. His life shows how God can raise up unexpected shepherds to guide His people with courage, wisdom, and holiness.
Ambrose was not originally a bishop—he was a respected Roman governor in Milan. When the Church there fell into division, Ambrose tried to restore peace. While speaking to the crowd, a small child suddenly shouted, “Ambrose for bishop!” The people echoed the cry, seeing in him a man of integrity. Though he was only a catechumen at the time, Ambrose accepted God’s call with humility. Within a week he was baptized, ordained, and consecrated bishop.
As Bishop of Milan, Ambrose became a fearless defender of the true Christian faith. He stood firmly against Arianism, taught with clarity the divinity of Christ, and guided the Church during a time of great confusion. His preaching was so powerful that it led to the conversion of one of the greatest saints in history—Saint Augustine, who later called Ambrose a spiritual father.
Ambrose was also a man of mercy, charity, and justice. He protected the poor, confronted unjust rulers, and reminded emperors that they too must bow to God’s law. For him, true Christian leadership meant serving with humility and loving with a courageous heart.
Today, Saint Ambrose invites us to seek wisdom rooted in Scripture, to stand firm in our faith, and to let our words and actions draw others closer to Christ.
Prayer to Saint Ambrose
Saint Ambrose, faithful shepherd and wise teacher of the Church,
you opened your heart to God’s call and guided His people with courage.
Help us to love the truth,
to defend our faith with humility and strength,
and to live in charity toward all.
Intercede for us in times of confusion,
and lead us to deeper trust in the mercy of Christ.
May your example inspire us to be bold in faith
and gentle in heart.
Saint Ambrose, pray for us. Amen.
