Today, the Church honors Saint Eligius, a 7th-century bishop and patron saint of goldsmiths, metalworkers, and the poor. Born in Aquitaine, France, Eligius was a skilled craftsman and goldsmith before entering the priesthood. He later became Bishop of Noyon and Tournai, known for his charity, devotion to God, and care for the poor.
Eligius dedicated his life to serving others, founding churches, monasteries, and hospitals. He was also a strong advocate for the dignity of work and the sanctity of labor, seeing his craftsmanship as an offering to God. Saint Eligius passed away on December 1, 660, and was remembered for his moral integrity, faith, and tireless service to the needy.
He is a reminder of the importance of serving others and living with integrity, no matter one’s vocation.
Prayer to Saint Eligius
Saint Eligius, faithful servant of God,
