Everyone has heard of praying or protesting outside abortion clinics, but pro-lifers in Fairbanks, Alaska, will be doing something a little different this month to encourage moms to choose life: singing Christmas carols.
“Let’s shine some love and light in front of one of the darkest places in Fairbanks,” an email alert from Right to Life — Interior Alaska said, according to Alaska Watchman. “The birth of Jesus Christ brings hope and life into the world. Come join us to celebrate His love for us together.”
Caroling will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. and 4 to 5 p.m. Dec. 10 outside Planned Parenthood’s Fairbanks Health Center.
The Fairbanks event is part of a nationwide effort to help women considering abortion around Christmas, as CatholicVote previously reported. “The idea is simple: we bring the hope and joy of Christmas to one of the world’s darkest places — the abortion clinic — in hopes that the familiar sounds of Christmas carols will save a life,” the Pro-Life Action League said in a statement about the practice of caroling in front of abortion providers.
Caroling events began in Chicago in 2003, as CatholicVote previously reported, and since then the practice has expanded and saved lives.
“In Jacksonville, Florida, a woman showed up with her daughter for an abortion and the daughter heard the singing, got real upset, went back to her car and said to her mom, ‘Find out what the heck’s going on,’” Eric Scheidler, executive director of the Pro-Life Action League, said in 2020.
Scheidler said that, after the young mother understood that the Christmas carols were being sung to encourage women like her to choose life, she left the clinic.
“The pro-lifers followed up,” Scheidler said, “and found out that the girl had absolutely chosen to keep her baby.”
