One Minute Catechism: who are punished in hell?

Those who are punished in hell are the souls who die in a state of unrepented mortal sin, having freely and knowingly rejected God’s love and mercy.
God desires the salvation of all, but He never forces anyone to love Him. Hell is the result of a person’s final choice to turn away from God.

Out of His love, God Himself instituted the Church to teach us the truth and to guide us safely on the way to heaven.
He also instituted the Sacrament of Penance (Confession) so that every sinner can be cleansed from all sin and restored to grace.

In simple words:
Hell is for those who freely refuse God’s grace until the end, rejecting the means of salvation He lovingly provides through His Church and His sacraments.
