An exact digital reproduction of the original image of Our Lady of Guadalupe is being brought to more than 50 parishes in Los Angeles in an annual pilgrimage that began in September and will culminate in a procession this December.
According to an emailed press release from the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, the pilgrimage journeying through parishes throughout the archdiocese also includes an image of St. Juan Diego, who encountered Our Lady of Guadalupe in 1531.
The pilgrimage of both images helps to spiritually prepare the faithful for the annual procession and Mass, set for Dec. 7 in East Los Angeles, honoring Our Lady of Guadalupe, according to the release.
“This year’s procession and Mass theme, ‘Our Lady of Guadalupe: Cause of Our Joy and Hope,’ is especially meaningful as it reflects the challenges and aspirations of our time, particularly among the immigrant community,” the release states. “Our Lady of Guadalupe stands as a beacon of hope, compassion, and solidarity, and reminds us of her maternal presence among those who seek justice, dignity, and a better life.”
According to the release, the 94th annual procession is the oldest religious procession in Los Angeles. Mexican Catholics who fled persecution by the Mexican government during the Cristero War began the tradition in observance of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, celebrated Dec. 12.
By the conclusion of the pilgrimage, the images will have visited 51 parishes, as well as cemeteries and a convent, according to the release. The full schedule of the route is available here. The image of Our Lady of Gudalupe has been blessed and touched to the original image, which is kept in Mexico City at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
“Her image,” the release says, “has been a symbol of unity, peace, compassion, and hope for people around the world.”
