Feast Day: October 30
Biography:
Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez was born in 1532 in Segovia, Spain. After losing his wife and two young children, he turned to a life of prayer and penance. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) as a humble lay brother rather than a priest, serving for over 40 years as the porter (doorkeeper) of the Jesuit College in Majorca.
Though his role seemed simple, Saint Alphonsus lived it with extraordinary holiness — greeting everyone who came to the door as if they were Christ Himself. His deep interior life and spiritual counsel inspired many, including Saint Peter Claver, the future missionary to slaves in South America.
Saint Alphonsus teaches us that holiness is not found in great deeds, but in doing ordinary tasks with great love and faithfulness to God. He died in 1617 and was canonized in 1888.
Reflection:
God does not ask us to be great in the world’s eyes, but to be faithful in the place He calls us. Every act of love, however small, can become a prayer.
Prayer:
Lord, through the example of Saint Alphonsus Rodriguez, teach us to serve You faithfully in our daily duties and to find You in the ordinary moments of life. Amen.
