- A new poll found that 70% of voters view the Democratic Party as “out of touch,” citing its prioritization of issues like LGBT rights, abortion, race, and climate change over crime and immigration.
- The study, conducted by a center-left research group, shows Democrats attracting liberals who are white, wealthy, and educated while losing support among working-class and union voters.
- Between 2013 and 2024, Democratic politicians’ support for progressive legislation rose sharply, reflecting a broader leftward shift.
- Analysis of party platforms found huge increases in mentions of race, environmental justice, and LGBTQ rights, while references to “men,” “fathers,” and “responsibility” declined. The report urges Democrats to moderate progressive language and collaborate with Republicans on crime and immigration legislation.
Seven in 10 voters say that the Democratic Party is “out of touch” due to its preference for prioritizing certain issues — such as LGBT ideology, abortion, race, and climate change — over problems like crime and immigration, according to a new poll.
Semafor political journalist David Weigel reported that the poll was conducted among hundreds of thousands of voters over six months by Welcome, a center-left political research center. According to Weigel, the party’s tendency to focus on “left-leaning ideas and rhetoric” has only attracted “self-described ‘white liberals’ while driving away other demographics who no longer feel the party has their best interests in mind.
“Democrats’ newer coalition is wealthier, more educated, and turns out far more easily than MAGA’s — but in the meantime, it keeps losing ground with less affluent voters and with unions. Those unions’ rank and file, increasingly, see Democrats as cultural elitists who look down on them and want to replace their jobs,” Weigel reported.
The poll found that Democratic politicians’ priorities in Congress began to shift between 2013 and 2024 — the beginning of former President Barack Obama’s second term to the end of former President Joe Biden’s term. Support for a bill that would investigate reparations for the descendents of slaves rose by 56%. Approval of a bill that would ban assault weapons increased by 47%, while legislation that would erase individual states’ abortion regulations received 98% support from the Democratic caucus in 2024, up from two-thirds of the caucus 11 years earlier.
According to Semafor, public perception of the party changed in the same time frame, with 55% ultimately concluding that Democrats are “too liberal,” up from 47% in 2013. The outlet also reported that the report studied national Democratic Party platforms from 2012 to 2023, finding “a surge in language about specific racial groups (up 828%), about ‘environmental justice’ (up 333%), and about LGBTQ rights (up 1044%).”
“Mentions of ‘men’ fell by 63%, of ‘fathers’ by 100%, and ‘responsibility’ by 83%,” Semafor additionally noted.
Elected Democrats have received copies of the report, which urges them to shift away from some progressive language regarding race, abortion, and LGBT ideology. The report also encourages them to nominate candidates who will be willing to agree with Republican lawmakers on immigration and crime legislation.
Semafor reported that former Illinois Rep. Cheri Bustos, a Democrat, endorsed the report, stating, “The Democratic Party had better listen — for the good of our nation.”
