Americans split along party lines over Bad Bunny Super Bowl halftime show

  • A Quinnipiac poll found that 48% of Americans approve of Bad Bunny performing at the Super Bowl halftime show, while 29% disapprove and 24% have no opinion.
  • Seventy-four percent of Democrats approve, compared with only 16% of Republicans; 63% of Republicans disapprove, reflecting alignment with Donald Trump’s criticism of the choice.
  • Support is higher among Hispanic (65%) and black (61%) Americans than among white Americans (41%), as well as among younger adults.
  • Critics, including conservative groups like Turning Point USA, oppose Bad Bunny’s selection due to his political views on immigration.

Americans are divided over the NFL’s decision to have Puerto Rican singer Bad Bunny perform at next year’s Super Bowl halftime show, largely along party lines, a new poll discovered.

The Quinnipiac poll, conducted in mid-October among 1,500 adults, found that 48% of Americans approve of the selection. Twenty-nine percent disapprove of Bad Bunny’s upcoming performance and 24% did not have an opinion. Democrats were the political party most likely to support Bad Bunny — 74% approved, compared with just 16% of Republicans. Sixty-three percent of Republicans said they disapproved of the pick.

As CatholicVote previously reported, the NFL’s choice of Bad Bunny has become controversial because of the singer’s political views. Bad Bunny has publicly spoken against President Donald Trump’s stance on immigration, saying he has concerns about mass deportations and targeting of Latinos.

Trump has criticized the decision, saying he doesn’t “know why they’re doing it.” Quinnipiac noted that Trump’s views are reflected in the lower numbers of Republicans who approve of Bad Bunny headlining the show.

According to Quinnipiac, Brittani Webb, a professor of media studies at Quinnipiac University, said that “The NFL chose a global superstar to perform for the Super Bowl Halftime Show, yet the immense popularity of Bad Bunny’s music can’t escape the political tensions currently felt across the United States.”

The poll also found that 65% of Hispanic Americans, 61% of black Americans, and 41% of white Americans support the pick. Younger adults aged 18 to 34 are more likely than those aged 65 or older to overwhelmingly approve of the decision. Sixty-four percent of younger adults approve and 17% do not, compared with 36% of older adults who support the NFL’s choice and 37% who oppose it.

According to NFL News, Bad Bunny performs in Spanish and “is expected to do so at the Super Bowl.” News Nation Now reported that Turning Point USA “has announced plans for an alternative halftime show,” and added that tens of thousands of people have signed a petition to replace Bad Bunny with country music singer George Strait.

CatholicVote previously reported that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Oct. 22 that the NFL will not reconsider its decision to feature Bad Bunny during the show, adding that he believes the selection of performers always receives “some blowback or criticism.”
