Feast Day: October 20
Patronage: The Passionist Order, evangelists, and missions
Today we honor Saint Paul of the Cross, founder of the Passionist Congregation, who devoted his life to preaching the love of Jesus Crucified.
Born in Italy in 1694, Paul Danei (later known as Paul of the Cross) experienced a deep conversion that moved him to dedicate his life entirely to God. Through prayer and penance, he sought to awaken in others a love for Christ’s Passion — the greatest proof of God’s love for humanity.
He founded the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ (the Passionists) to help priests and laypeople meditate on the sufferings of Jesus and live lives of holiness and compassion. Saint Paul spent countless hours in prayer, often entering deep ecstasy as he reflected on the Cross.
Reflection:
Saint Paul of the Cross teaches us that meditating on the Passion of Christ strengthens our faith and fills our hearts with divine love.
Prayer:
O God, You filled Saint Paul of the Cross with a great love for the Passion of Your Son. Grant that, by his example, we may draw strength from the Cross and share in the glory of the Resurrection. Amen.
