Relic of St Carlo Acutis travels from Assisi to Los Angeles

A first-class relic of Saint Carlo Acutis is being brought from the Diocese of Assisi, Italy, to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California this week, to give prisoners at a downtown jail and diocesan parishioners the opportunity for veneration.

The relic is a pericardium heart relic from the first Millennial saint, according to an emailed Oct. 19 press release from St. Thomas the Apostle Church. The church is set to mark the start of the relic’s three-day visit with a special Mass and procession Oct. 20 at 6 p.m. local time. After the procession, it will be available for veneration until 10 p.m.

“This is a unique opportunity to honor the life and holiness of a young saint who embraced the Eucharist and modern technology as paths to God,” the release states.

St. Carlo Acutis is known especially for his devotion to the Eucharist and his talent for computer programming — which he used to create a website documenting Eucharistic miracles. He was diagnosed with leukemia at age 15 in 2006, and he offered up the sufferings from this for the Lord, the Pope and the Church, as CatholicVote previously reported. Pope Leo XIV canonized Carlo Acutis Sept. 7 along with Saint Pier Giorgio Frassati, another young man who exhibited extraordinary holiness.

Before the Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, the relic was set to be present at a special Mass with prisoners at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles Oct. 20, according to the release. The relic was also brought to St. Monica Parish Church in Santa Monica, according to the release.

The same day as St. Carlo Acutis’ canonization, Archbishop José Gomez of Los Angeles dedicated a new chapel containing a relic of St. Carlo in the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The chapel, called the Chapel of the Young Witnesses, also has relics of Saints Maria Goretti and José Sánchez del Río, both of whom died at a young age.

The Archdiocese of Los Angeles stated in a September press release about the witness, “These young saints, though taken from this world at a young age, blazed a trail of holiness through radiant lives rooted in deep friendship with Jesus — reminding us that holiness is not a distant dream, but a real and attainable path.”
