Feast Day: October 19
Patronage: North America, Canada, and missionaries
Today the Church honors Saint John de Brébeuf, Saint Isaac Jogues, and their Jesuit companions, known as the North American Martyrs. These heroic missionaries brought the light of Christ to the native peoples of Canada and the northern United States in the 1600s.
Despite brutal hardships, hunger, and constant danger, they continued to preach the Gospel with love and humility. Saint Isaac Jogues even returned to mission work after enduring torture and captivity — a remarkable act of courage and forgiveness.
Their lives remind us that true faith shines brightest in the face of suffering and that the love of Christ can transform even the darkest moments into seeds of hope.
Prayer:
O God, You blessed the North American Martyrs with courage and faith. Grant that through their prayers, we may remain steadfast in love for You and in service to others. Amen.
