Feast Day: October 18
Patronage: Physicians, artists, painters, and butchers
Biography:
Saint Luke, a physician from Antioch, was one of the four Evangelists and the author of the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles. A close companion of Saint Paul, he faithfully accompanied him on his missionary journeys and shared in his sufferings. Luke’s writings emphasize the mercy of God, the joy of salvation, and special care for the poor and the outcast. Tradition holds that he was also an artist who painted the first icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Saint Luke is honored as the patron of physicians, artists, and those who bring the message of Christ to others through word and art. He died a martyr for the faith.
Prayer:
O glorious Saint Luke, faithful companion of Saint Paul and beloved Evangelist, pray that we may proclaim the Good News of Christ with the same courage and love that filled your heart. May your example inspire us to bring God’s mercy to all we meet. Amen.
