President Donald Trump posthumously awarded Turning Point USA (TPUSA) co-founder Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom on Oct. 14, hailing him as a “fearless warrior for liberty” who inspired millions of young Americans.
“Today, we’re here to honor and remember a fearless warrior for liberty, a beloved leader who galvanized the next generation like nobody I’ve ever seen before,” Trump said during the Rose Garden ceremony. “And an American patriot of the deepest conviction, the finest quality, and the highest caliber — the late, great Charlie Kirk.”
Trump presented the nation’s highest civilian honor to Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, who was recently named TPUSA’s new CEO. The ceremony coincided with what would have been Kirk’s 32nd birthday.
Opening the ceremony, Trump noted that rain had been forecast but said the skies cleared because “God was watching.”
“I was telling Erika God was watching, and he didn’t want that for Charlie,” Trump said. “That’s really beautiful. Couldn’t be more beautiful today.”
Trump went on to describe Kirk’s death as “an assassination in the prime of his life for boldly speaking the truth, for living his faith, and relentlessly fighting for a better and stronger America.”
After accepting the medal, Erika delivered emotional remarks, thanking the Trump administration and supporters while pledging to carry forward her husband’s mission.
“You are the heartbeat of this future movement,” she told TPUSA members. “Everything Charlie built — you guys are the legacy holders of that. You’re living his mission with him.”
She said the ceremony was a celebration of freedom, which she called the “national interest of the United States,” adding that the “freest people in the world are those whose hearts belong to Christ.”
Turning toward Trump, she said, “Honestly, President Trump, I have spent 7 and a half years trying to find the perfect birthday gift for Charlie,” and added, “Now I can say with confidence, Mr. President, that you have given him the best birthday gift he could ever have.”
