Feast Day: October 14
Patronage: Cemetery workers
Biography:
Saint Callistus I served as pope from around 217 to 222 AD during a time of great challenge and persecution for the early Church. Before becoming pope, he endured slavery and imprisonment for his faith. As pope, he was known for his mercy and compassion, especially toward sinners. He emphasized the power of forgiveness and reconciliation, allowing even serious sinners who repented to return to the Church—a teaching that caused controversy among stricter early Christians. His leadership helped shape the Church’s understanding of God’s boundless mercy. Saint Callistus was martyred in Rome, likely during a local uprising against Christians.
Prayer:
O God, through the intercession of Saint Callistus, grant us the grace to be merciful and forgiving as You are merciful. Strengthen us in faith and courage to follow You even in times of trial. Amen.
