Feast Day: October 13
Patron of: Youth, purity, and those suffering from illness
Biography:
Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa was born in 1904 in Balasar, Portugal. As a young girl, she was full of life and joy, but at the age of 14 she became paralyzed after jumping from a window to escape men who tried to attack her. Confined to bed for the rest of her life, she offered her intense suffering for the conversion of sinners and in reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
For the last 13 years of her life, Alexandrina lived on the Holy Eucharist alone, without any other food. Her life became a living testimony to the power of the Eucharist and total trust in God’s will. She had a deep love for Our Lady and encouraged devotion to the First Saturdays in honor of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
She died on October 13, 1955 — the anniversary of the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima.
Prayer:
Blessed Alexandrina,
you loved Jesus in the Eucharist with all your heart and offered your suffering for souls.
Help us to love Him more deeply and to unite our trials with His cross.
Amen.
