President Donald Trump’s administration is preparing to broaden the Mexico City Policy, aiming to ensure that no U.S. foreign aid dollars support abortion, according to The Daily Signal.
The department “will soon take additional steps to close loopholes that allowed taxpayer funding for promotion of abortion in previous iterations of the Mexico City Policy and expand the scope of the policy to ensure every penny of U.S. foreign assistance prioritizes American values, not the woke agenda,” a senior State Department official told The Daily Signal.
The new rules will reportedly go beyond abortion funding and bar U.S. aid from supporting gender ideology; diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs; and projects promoting LGBT causes.
The provision will also apply to a wide range of health and humanitarian programs — including those that address HIV/AIDS, maternal and child health, nutrition, and infectious diseases — and cover all non-military foreign assistance, the outlet reported.
The Daily Signal noted that this means both foreign and domestic nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), international organizations, and even foreign governments receiving U.S. aid will be prohibited from promoting abortion, gender ideology, or DEI-related initiatives.
“The State Department continues to advance President Trump’s American First foreign policy,” the official said.
In a Jan. 24 memorandum, Trump reinstated the Mexico City Policy, directing the Secretary of State to ensure U.S. foreign aid does not fund any organizations that perform or promote abortion overseas.
“I further direct the Secretary of State to take all necessary actions, to the extent permitted by law, to ensure that U.S. taxpayer dollars do not fund organizations or programs that support or participate in the management of a program of coercive abortion or involuntary sterilization,” the memo states.
According to The Daily Signal, the policy has been repeatedly rescinded by Democratic presidents and reinstated by Republican presidents since its establishment in 1984. Former President Joe Biden rescinded it during his first week in office.
