Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast Day: August 22

On August 22, the Catholic Church honors Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. This beautiful feast, known as the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary, celebrates Mary’s exalted role as Queen in the Kingdom of God, united with her Son, Jesus Christ, the King of Kings.

What Does the Queenship Mean?

Mary is not a queen in earthly power or riches, but in humility, service, and love. Because of her perfect obedience to God and her role as the Mother of the Redeemer, she was crowned in glory and shares in Christ’s kingship.

The Church teaches that after her Assumption into Heaven, Mary was crowned by Christ as Queen of Angels and Saints. Her queenship does not take away from Jesus’ unique kingship but rather flows from it.

Biblical Roots

  • In ancient Israel, the queen mother had a special place of honor (see 1 Kings 2:19–20).
  • In Revelation 12:1, Mary is seen as “a woman clothed with the sun, with a crown of twelve stars”—a sign of her heavenly queenship.

 Papal Teaching

Pope Pius XII established this feast in 1954, declaring Mary Queen not only because of her Divine Motherhood but also because of her share in Christ’s saving mission. She reigns in gentleness and mercy, always leading souls closer to Jesus.

How to Honor Mary as Queen

  • Pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary, especially the 5th Mystery: Mary is crowned Queen of Heaven.
  • Consecrate yourself to Jesus through Mary, following her guidance as a loving Queen and Mother.
  • Attend Mass and offer acts of love in honor of her Queenship.

Prayer to Mary, Queen of Heaven

O Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth, we honor your royal dignity and ask for your intercession. Reign in our hearts, guide us to your Son, and protect us under your holy mantle.
Amen.
