The First Friday Devotion is a beloved Catholic practice centered on the Sacred Heart of Jesus, honoring His immense love for humanity. This devotion was revealed by Jesus Himself to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French nun, in a series of apparitions between 1673 and 1675.
The Origins of the Devotion
In these apparitions, Jesus showed St. Margaret Mary His Sacred Heart—burning with love, crowned with thorns, and pierced by a lance—as a sign of His suffering and love for sinners. He asked for reparation for the sins of the world and promised many spiritual blessings to those who would honor His Sacred Heart.
Jesus gave Twelve Promises to those who faithfully observe the devotion. One of the most well-known promises is:
“I promise you in the excessive mercy of My Heart that My all-powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the First Fridays for nine consecutive months the grace of final repentance; they shall not die in My disgrace.”
How to Practice the First Friday Devotion
To participate in this devotion, Catholics are encouraged to:
- Attend Holy Mass on the first Friday of nine consecutive months.
- Receive Holy Communion in a state of grace, offering it in reparation for sins committed against the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
- Spend time in prayer and, if possible, participate in Eucharistic Adoration or recite prayers honoring the Sacred Heart.
Many also choose to go to Confession within a few days before or after First Friday to be spiritually prepared.
The Promises of Jesus
Among the Twelve Promises given to St. Margaret Mary, Jesus assured:
- Peace in families.
- Comfort in all afflictions.
- Refuge at the hour of death.
- Blessings upon homes where His Sacred Heart is honored.
- A fervent love for Jesus and growth in holiness.
A Call to Love and Reparation
The First Friday Devotion is not merely a set of pious acts—it is an invitation to draw closer to the merciful Heart of Christ, to console Him, and to repair the wounds caused by sin. It renews the believer’s love for the Eucharist, emphasizes Christ’s mercy, and fosters a spirit of trust, repentance, and hope.
