Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord

August 6

On August 6, the Church celebrates the Feast of the Transfiguration of Our Lord, a moment of divine glory when Jesus revealed His heavenly majesty to three of His apostles—Peter, James, and John—on Mount Tabor.

 What Happened?

The event is described in the Gospels (Matthew 17:1–9, Mark 9:2–8, Luke 9:28–36). As Jesus prayed, His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly, Moses and Elijah appeared, speaking with Him. Then a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him.”

This revelation gave the apostles a glimpse of Christ’s divinity and glory, strengthening their faith before His Passion.

Spiritual Meaning

The Transfiguration is a preview of the Resurrection and a promise of our own transformation in Christ. It teaches us:

  • Jesus is true God and true man.
  • We are called to be transformed by grace.
  • The Cross leads to glory.

Tradition in the Church

  • The Eastern Church has celebrated this feast since the 4th century.
  • In the Western Church, it became universal in the 15th century.
  • The feast is a reminder to seek God’s presence through prayer, especially in times of trial.

 Prayer for the Transfiguration

Lord Jesus, You revealed Your glory to strengthen the faith of Your apostles. Transform our hearts and help us follow You through the Cross to the glory of the Resurrection.
Amen.
