Also known as the Dormition Fast or Assumption Fast, this period of fasting is a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, practiced especially in Eastern Catholic and Eastern Orthodox traditions from August 1 to August 14, leading up to the Feast of the Assumption on August 15.

What Is the Fasting of Our Lady?
This two-week fast honors Mary’s Dormition (falling asleep) and Assumption into Heaven. It is a time of prayer, repentance, and preparation for her great feast.
Dates:
- Start: August 1
- End: August 14
- Feast Celebrated: August 15 – Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Spiritual Purpose:
- To imitate Mary’s humility and obedience to God
- To grow in purity, self-discipline, and closeness to Christ
- To prepare the soul for the celebration of her heavenly glory
Practices During the Fast:
- Prayer: Pray the Rosary daily, especially the Glorious Mysteries
- Fasting:
- Eastern Catholics/Orthodox: Traditionally abstain from meat, dairy, and sometimes oil
- Roman Catholics: May choose to fast or make personal sacrifices (e.g., avoid sweets, media, etc.)
- Confession: Prepare your soul through Sacramental Confession
- Novena to the Assumption (August 6–14): Many begin a 9-day novena leading to the Assumption.
Catholic Reflection:
Though not a mandatory fast for Roman Catholics, it is a beautiful devotion that allows the faithful to walk with Maryduring her final days on earth and rejoice in her glorious Assumption, body and soul, into Heaven.
Prayer for the Fasting Period:
O Blessed Mother, during this time of preparation and prayer, help me to grow in purity, humility, and love for your Son. Guide me to imitate your faith and prepare my heart for the joy of your Assumption. Amen.
