Saint of the Day: St. Bridget of Sweden

Patron Saint of: Sweden, widows, and Europe

About St. Bridget of Sweden

Saint Bridget of Sweden (1303–1373) was a wife, mother of eight children (including Saint Catherine of Sweden), mystic, and founder of the Bridgettine Order of nuns. Born into nobility, she was married at a young age to Ulf Gudmarsson, with whom she shared a deep and devout faith. After his death, she devoted her life entirely to God.

Bridget received powerful mystical visions of Christ’s Passion, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and heavenly realities, which she faithfully recorded. These revelations greatly influenced Christian spirituality and were approved by the Church. She traveled to Rome and worked tirelessly for Church reform, unity, and the return of the Pope from Avignon.

Pope Boniface IX canonized her in 1391. In 1999, Pope St. John Paul II named her one of the patron saints of Europe, alongside St. Benedict and St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross.

Prayer:

O God, You guided Saint Bridget along the path of deep prayer and faithful service. Through her intercession, help us to seek You above all things, to love Your Church, and to carry our crosses with trust and joy. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
