What is St. Veronica Giuliani Known for?

St. Veronica Giuliani (1660–1727) was born Orsola Giuliani in Mercatello, Italy. From her earliest years she felt a deep call to prayer and penance. At age 17 she entered the Capuchin Poor Clares in Città di Castello, taking the name Veronica.

Known for her intense mystical union with Christ, she received the stigmata and underwent many interior trials, which she bore with heroic patience. Her private writings—nearly 30,000 pages of spiritual journals and letters—reveal a soul consumed by love for the Sacred Heart. She ministered to her sisters with gentle charity and obedience, earning respect even amidst her extraordinary gifts.

After 64 years in the convent, Veronica died in 1727. Her canonization in 1839 recognized both her rigorous asceticism and her tender devotion, making her a model for all who seek deeper union with God through prayer, sacrifice, and love.

Prayer

St. Veronica Giuliani, you carried the wounds of Christ in your body and heart.
Teach us to embrace our own crosses with faith,
to persevere in prayer amid darkness,
and to love God above all things.
Through your intercession, may we grow ever closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Amen.
