Happy Feast Day of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Solemnity: (July 2, 2025)

Biblical Foundation

The Feast of the Visitation commemorates Mary’s journey to visit her cousin Elizabeth, as recorded in Saint Luke’s Gospel (Luke 1:39–56). Soon after the Annunciation, Mary “traveled to the hill country in haste” (Luke 1:39) to share her joy and God’s promise. Upon Mary’s greeting, John the Baptist leapt in Elizabeth’s womb, and Elizabeth was “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Luke 1:41), proclaiming Mary “blessed among women” and acknowledging the child she bore as the Savior.

Origins of the Feast

  • Early Celebrations: By the 4th century the Eastern Church already marked Mary’s solidarity with her cousin.
  • Western Adoption: In the 13th century, Saint Bonaventure and Pope Urban IV promoted the feast.
  • Liturgical Rank: Today it is a Solemnity in the General Roman Calendar, reflecting its universal importance.

Liturgical Significance

  • Color: Liturgical vestments are white or gold, signifying joy and glory.
  • Propers: The Introit invites us to sing with joy: “Let us rejoice in the Lord; exult in God our Savior” (Isaiah 12:6).
  • Gospel Acclamation: We acclaim Mary’s words: “From now on all ages will call me blessed” (Luke 1:48).
  • Collect Prayer: Seeks grace to follow Mary’s example of charity and faith.

Spiritual Reflections

  1. Service and Charity
Mary set aside her own comfort to serve Elizabeth in her old age and late pregnancy. We are called to imitate her selfless love—visiting the sick, comforting the lonely, reaching out in practical service.
  2. Joyful Witness
Both women overflowed with praise: Elizabeth with thanksgiving, Mary with her Magnificat (Luke 1:46–55). The Visitation invites us to live with a heart of praise in every circumstance.
  3. Fruitfulness of Faith
In sharing her faith, Mary’s presence brought new life—John the Baptist’s first act of prophecy. Our witness, rooted in humble trust, bears spiritual fruit in others.

Devotional Practices

  • Recite the Magnificat: Meditate on each verse, allowing Mary’s song to shape your own prayer.
  • Visitation Novena: Offer nine days of prayer asking Mary’s intercession for the sick, expectant mothers, or family reconciliation.
  • Acts of Charity: Perform a corporal or spiritual work of mercy in honor of Mary’s journey of service.

Prayer

O Blessed Virgin of the Visitation,
you went in haste to share the Good News and brought joy to Elizabeth’s home.
Teach us to serve our neighbors with your own heart,
to proclaim God’s mercy with fearless praise,
and to bear Christ to all we meet.
Stir in us the same Holy Spirit that moved Elizabeth’s heart,
that we too may rejoice and magnify the Lord in our daily lives.
Amen.

May the Visitation inspire us to “go in haste” each day—bringing Christ’s love, mercy, and joy to the world.
