Saint of the Day: Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

Feast Day: June 29
Patrons of: The Papacy, bishops, missionary work, confessors of the faith

Biography:

On this great Solemnity, the Church honors both Saint Peter, the fisherman called by Christ to be “the rock” upon which He would build His Church, and Saint Paul, the zealous Pharisee whose encounter with the Risen Lord on the road to Damascus made him the “Apostle to the Gentiles.”

  • St. Peter, originally named Simon, left his nets to follow Jesus. He witnessed the Transfiguration and was entrusted with shepherding Christ’s flock. Though he denied Our Lord in weakness, he was restored by Him and ultimately crowned his ministry in Rome by giving his life for the faith.
  • St. Paul, born Saul of Tarsus, persecuted Christians until Christ’s light struck him blind. After his conversion, Paul preached the Gospel tirelessly through the Mediterranean world, planting communities, writing epistles, and enduring shipwrecks, imprisonment, and beatings. He too died a martyr in Rome, ever singing Christ’s praises.

Together, Peter and Paul symbolize the unity of Jewish and Gentile Christians, the continuity of the Church’s foundation, and the cost of discipleship.

Prayer:

O glorious Princes of the Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul,
you both laid down your lives for Christ and His Church.
Through your prayers, grant that we may be rooted in faith like Peter,
and burn with zeal for souls like Paul.
Strengthen all who serve in the Church’s ministry,
guard us from error, and lead us to the true eternal Rock,
Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
