USCCB, Catholic Charities USA under federal investigation regarding immigration assistance

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops and Catholic Charities USA are among the more than 200 non-governmental organizations that congressmen are investigating in a probe of organizations that served “inadmissible aliens” during the Biden administration, according to a June 11 news release.

House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Dr. Mark E. Green, R-Tenn., and Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability Chairman Josh Brecheen, R-Okla., are reviewing whether the organizations used taxpayer dollars to “facilitate illegal activity, as the previous administration incentivized millions of inadmissible aliens to cross our borders –– many of whom were subsequently aided by NGOs after being released at the border under the Biden-Harris administration’s mass catch-and-release policies,” the release said.

Green and Brecheen have asked each organization to respond to questions regarding money they received from the government, any lawsuit they have been part of against the federal government, and any assistance they gave illegal immigrants or “unaccompanied alien children” since January 2021.

“To respond to unprecedented surges of illegal immigrants between January 20, 2021, and January 20, 2025, the federal government outsourced a much greater share of its migrant response to NGOs, increasing NGO revenues while placing the burden of the Biden Administration’s policies on American taxpayers,” the chairmen wrote.

During the Biden administration, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) gave billions of dollars to NGOs to give services such as transportation and housing to illegal immigrants in the US.

“The Biden Administration’s reliance on NGOs therefore created a pull factor by signaling to those who arrived illegally or without proper documentation that they could expect such assistance, all expensed to American taxpayers, once they arrived in the United States,” Green and Brecheen wrote.

The organizations’ annual revenues increased “significantly,” they wrote.

“Further, the Committee is concerned that some of these NGOs may currently be actively advising and training illegal aliens on strategies to avoid cooperation with immigration officials,” the congressmen wrote.

They also wrote that the committee is disturbed by how little accountability exists regarding how the organizations spend the money.

Neither the USCCB nor Catholic Charities USA responded to CatholicVote’s request for comment and confirmation that they received the letter.

As CatholicVote previously reported, the list also includes the Coalition of Human Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA). Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., the chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime and Counterterrorism, is reviewing whether that organization is funding the Los Angeles riots.
