CV NEWS FEED // Cardinal Orlando Quevedo, Archbishop Emeritus of Cotabato, has spoken out against a grenade attack against a Catholic chapel in the Philippines, that took place on Pentecost Sunday during a Bible study meeting.
According to Asia News, Cardinal Quevedo described the grenade attack as “dastardly” and a “horrendous sacrilegious act that cries out to heaven”. He added that the attack is a “crime that deserves the severest condemnation,” having targeted Catholics who were “gathered to worship God in a sacred place”.
“I appeal to our security, military and investigative forces… to identify those responsible and bring them to justice,” the Cardinal added, according to Asia News.
The attack took place on May 19, when two men threw the grenade into Santo Niño Chapel, in Cotabato, a municipality in Mindanao. Two people have been reported injured from the attack, suffering from being hit by shrapnel.
Asia News reported that the Manila government promptly condemned the grenade attack.
Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation and Unity of the Philippines Carlito Galvez Jr. stated, according to Asia News, “We extend our solidarity to the families of those wounded in this incident and wish them a full and speedy recovery.”
Asia News reported that Galvez Jr. condemned the suspects’ actions as “‘a direct attack’ on religious freedom” and against “the Filipino people’s ‘commitment to the practice of worship’ and on ‘peaceful coexistence.’”
