Saint of the Day: Saint John Paul II, Pope

Feast Day: October 22

Saint John Paul II, one of the most beloved popes of modern times, devoted his life to proclaiming Jesus Christ, defending the dignity of every human person, and encouraging people throughout the world to live without fear and place their trust in God.

His famous words, “Be not afraid! Open wide the doors to Christ!”, continue to inspire Catholics and Christians around the world.

Biography of Saint John Paul II

Saint John Paul II was born Karol Józef Wojtyła on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland. His childhood was marked by sorrow. His mother died when he was nine years old, and his older brother died a few years later. In 1941, he also lost his beloved father.

Despite these painful losses, Karol remained strong in faith. During the Second World War, Nazi authorities closed the university where he studied, and he worked in a quarry and a chemical factory. At the same time, he secretly pursued his vocation to the priesthood.

He was ordained a priest in 1946 and later became Archbishop of Kraków and a cardinal. On October 16, 1978, he was elected Pope, taking the name John Paul II. Six days later, he formally began his pontificate.

As pope, he traveled extensively, celebrated the faith with millions of people, and encouraged young Catholics to follow Christ. He played an important role in the Church’s efforts to defend human dignity and contributed to the preparation of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which was published in 1992.

Saint John Paul II had a profound devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. His episcopal motto, Totus Tuus—meaning “Totally Yours”—expressed his complete dedication to Mary and his desire to belong entirely to Jesus through her maternal intercession.

On May 13, 1981, an assassin shot him in Saint Peter’s Square. The Pope survived and later forgave the man who had attempted to kill him. He attributed his survival to the protection of Our Lady of Fatima and made a pilgrimage to Fatima to give thanks.

In his later years, he suffered from Parkinson’s disease and other health problems. Even as his physical strength declined, he continued to serve the Church and bear witness to Christ through his suffering.

Saint John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at the Vatican. Pope Benedict XVI beatified him in 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him on April 27, 2014.

His feast day is celebrated on October 22, the anniversary of the beginning of his pontificate.

O Holy Saint John Paul II, faithful shepherd of Christ’s flock, you devoted your life to proclaiming the Gospel and leading souls to Jesus Christ.

You taught the world not to be afraid, but to open its heart to the Redeemer. Through your example of courage, prayer, and perseverance, you showed that even in suffering we can remain united with the Lord.

Please intercede for me before the throne of Almighty God. Obtain for me the grace to grow in faith, hope, and charity, to remain steadfast in times of trial, and to trust in God’s loving providence.

Pray for the Holy Catholic Church, for the Pope, for priests and religious, for families, for young people, and for all those who have lost hope. May the Blessed Virgin Mary guide us closer to her Son, Jesus Christ.

A Reflection for the Feast of Saint John Paul II

Saint John Paul II reminds us that holiness does not mean living without suffering or fear. It means trusting in God even when life becomes difficult. He endured the loss of loved ones, persecution, an assassination attempt, and serious illness, yet continued to proclaim the love and mercy of Jesus Christ.

On his feast day, let us ask God for the courage to defend our Catholic faith, the grace to forgive those who hurt us, and the strength to remain faithful to Christ until the end.

May we remember his powerful message: Do not be afraid to welcome Jesus into every part of your life.

Saint John Paul II, pray for us!
