Feast Day: September 10
Today, September 10, the Catholic Church honors St. Nicholas of Tolentino, an Augustinian priest who devoted his life to prayer, penance, preaching, and serving those in need.
St. Nicholas is especially remembered for his great love for the Holy Souls in Purgatory, his compassion for the poor and suffering, and his deep devotion to the Eucharist. His life reminds us that prayer and sacrifice offered with love can become a powerful way of helping others.
Who Was St. Nicholas of Tolentino?
St. Nicholas was born around 1245 in Sant’Angelo in Pontano, Italy. His parents had prayed for a child, and from his earliest years Nicholas showed an unusual love for prayer and solitude.
As a young man, he was deeply moved by a sermon about the vanity of worldly things. He decided to give his life completely to God and entered the Order of St. Augustine.
Nicholas was ordained a priest in 1271. He spent many years in Tolentino, where he preached, heard confessions, cared for the poor, and encouraged people to return to God.
He became known for his gentle character, humility, prayer, and great love for the suffering. He also had a special devotion to the souls of the faithful departed and offered prayers, Masses, and penances for them.
St. Nicholas died on September 10, 1305. He was canonized by Pope Eugene IV in 1446, and his feast is celebrated on September 10.
St. Nicholas and the Holy Souls
One of the most beautiful parts of St. Nicholas’s spirituality was his love for the souls in Purgatory.
He prayed and offered penances for the deceased, asking God to bring them into the fullness of eternal life.
This reminds us that we should never forget our loved ones who have died. We can pray for them, offer Masses for them, pray the Rosary for them, and offer our sacrifices for their souls.
The Church teaches us to pray for the dead because our prayer is an act of charity.
St. Nicholas and the Poor
St. Nicholas also had a special love for the poor.
As an Augustinian friar, he was entrusted with helping those who came to the monastery seeking food. His generosity became so great that those responsible for the monastery sometimes worried that he was giving away too much.
But Nicholas understood that Christian charity requires us to see Christ in those who are suffering.
His example teaches us that holiness is not only about our private prayers. Our love for God should lead us to love and serve our neighbor.
What Can We Learn From St. Nicholas of Tolentino?
St. Nicholas teaches us several important lessons:
- Pray faithfully, even when we do not immediately see the results.
- Pray for the souls of the faithful departed.
- Be generous toward the poor and suffering.
- Trust God during difficult times.
- Make sacrifices for the good of others.
- Stay close to Jesus in the Eucharist.
- Bring people closer to God through kindness and good example.
His life reminds us that even simple acts of prayer, sacrifice, and charity can have eternal value.
A Prayer to St. Nicholas of Tolentino
Dear St. Nicholas of Tolentino,
You devoted your life to Jesus Christ through prayer, sacrifice, preaching, and loving service to the poor and suffering.
Please intercede for me before the throne of God.
Help me to grow in faith and to trust God more deeply in every circumstance of my life.
Teach me to pray with perseverance and to offer my sufferings and sacrifices for the good of others.
St. Nicholas, you had a special love for the Holy Souls. Please pray for my departed loved ones and for all the souls in Purgatory, that God may bring them into the joy of Heaven.
Help me to remember those who are suffering and to respond to them with compassion and generosity.
Bring my special intentions before Jesus and ask Him to grant me what is truly best for my soul.

A Spiritual Practice for Today
Today, follow the example of St. Nicholas by doing something for someone who is in need.
You could:
- Pray for a deceased family member.
- Offer a Rosary for the Holy Souls.
- Have a Mass offered for someone who has died.
- Give food or assistance to someone who is poor.
- Forgive someone who has hurt you.
- Offer a small sacrifice to Jesus for another person’s intention.
Then take a moment to pray:
“Jesus, through the intercession of St. Nicholas of Tolentino, teach me to love You through prayer, sacrifice, and charity.”
St. Nicholas of Tolentino, pray for us.
May his example inspire us to remain faithful to Jesus, to care for those who suffer, and to remember the souls who have gone before us in faith.
