Saint of the Day: St. Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr

On August 10, the Catholic Church celebrates the feast of St. Lawrence, one of the seven deacons of Rome and one of the most honored martyrs of the early Church.

St. Lawrence served the Church during the third century under Pope St. Sixtus II. As a deacon, he was entrusted with caring for the poor and distributing the Church’s goods to those in need. He understood that the treasures of the Church were not earthly riches, but the people whom Christ had entrusted to His care.

During the persecution of the Emperor Valerian in the year 258, Pope St. Sixtus II was arrested and martyred. St. Lawrence was also arrested shortly afterward. According to ancient Christian tradition, the authorities demanded that he hand over the treasures of the Church.

St. Lawrence gathered the poor, the sick, widows, orphans, and those whom the Church had helped and presented them, saying in substance that these were the treasures of the Church.

For his courageous faith, St. Lawrence was condemned to death. He remained faithful to Christ until the end, becoming a glorious witness to the Gospel and an example of courage, charity, and generosity.

St. Lawrence’s life reminds us that Christian charity is not simply an act of kindness but a way of serving Christ Himself. He saw Jesus in the poor and suffering and gave himself completely in service to God and His Church.

His martyrdom also reminds Christians that earthly possessions pass away, while faith, charity, and love of God endure forever.

Prayer to St. Lawrence

O glorious St. Lawrence, faithful deacon and courageous martyr of Christ, you served the Church with humility and devoted yourself to the poor and suffering.

Obtain for us the grace to recognize Christ in those who are in need and to serve others with generous and loving hearts.

When we face trials, temptations, or difficulties, help us to remain steadfast in faith and courageous in following Jesus Christ.

Pray especially for the poor, the persecuted, and all those who suffer. May your example teach us that true riches are found not in earthly possessions, but in loving God and serving our neighbor.

St. Lawrence, faithful servant of Christ and glorious martyr, pray for us and help us remain faithful to the Gospel until the end.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Lawrence, pray for us!
