St. Lydia of Thyatira is honored as the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe. A successful merchant of purple cloth from the city of Thyatira, she lived in Philippi, where she worshiped the God of Israel. Her life changed forever when she listened to the preaching of St. Paul during his second missionary journey.
The Book of Acts tells us that “the Lord opened her heart” to receive Paul’s message. Lydia was baptized along with her entire household, becoming one of the earliest Christian believers in Europe. Filled with faith and generosity, she welcomed St. Paul and his companions into her home, which soon became a gathering place for the first Christian community in Philippi.
St. Lydia reminds us that faith begins with an open heart and grows through hospitality, generosity, and trust in God. Although Scripture records only a few details about her life, her example continues to inspire Christians to welcome Christ into their homes and hearts and to support the mission of the Church.
She is the patron saint of cloth merchants, dyers, and those engaged in business, and she is often invoked by those seeking to use their work and resources for the glory of God.

Prayer
O glorious St. Lydia, whose heart the Lord opened to receive the Gospel with faith and joy, pray for us that we may always be attentive to God’s voice and generous in serving others.
Help us to welcome Christ into our homes, use our blessings to build His Kingdom, and remain faithful witnesses to the Gospel in our daily lives.
Through your intercession, may we grow in faith, charity, and trust in God’s providence.
