Saint of the Day: St. Willibald (c. 700–787)

St. Willibald was an English missionary, bishop, and pilgrim who devoted his life to spreading the Gospel throughout Europe. Born into a devout Christian family in England around the year 700, he made a pilgrimage to the Holy Land as a young man, visiting Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Nazareth, and many other sacred places associated with the life of Jesus.

After returning from his travels, Willibald joined the missionary work of his uncle, St. Boniface, helping to evangelize Germany. He was later appointed the first Bishop of Eichstätt, where he founded monasteries, educated clergy, and faithfully served the Church for many years.

St. Willibald is remembered for his deep faith, missionary zeal, humility, and love for the Holy Land. His remarkable pilgrimage is one of the earliest detailed accounts of Christian travel to the sacred sites of Christ’s life.

Prayer

O glorious St. Willibald, faithful pilgrim and courageous missionary, pray for us that we may follow Christ with joyful hearts wherever He leads us. Help us to grow in faith, persevere in times of difficulty, and always seek the Kingdom of God above all else. May your example inspire us to proclaim the Gospel with love and humility.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

St. Willibald, pray for us!
