On May 29, the Catholic Church honors Saint Paul VI, the pope who faithfully guided the Church during a time of great change and helped bring the message of Christ to the modern world.
Born Giovanni Battista Montini in Italy in 1897, Saint Paul VI dedicated his life to serving the Church. He became pope in 1963 during the Second Vatican Council and continued the important work of renewing and strengthening the mission of the Catholic Church.
Saint Paul VI traveled widely around the world, becoming one of the first modern popes to make international pilgrimages. In 1964, he visited the Holy Land, praying in Jerusalem and Nazareth and meeting Christian leaders in a historic journey of peace and unity.
He strongly encouraged evangelization, prayer, holiness, and dialogue with the modern world while remaining faithful to Catholic teaching.
Saint Paul VI is especially remembered for his deep humility, love for the Church, and devotion to Christ. Despite many challenges and criticisms during his pontificate, he remained faithful to his mission and trusted in God.
His famous words continue inspiring Catholics today:
“Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers.”
Saint Paul VI reminds us that true holiness is found in faithfulness, courage, and trusting God even during difficult times.
Prayer
Saint Paul VI, faithful shepherd of the Church, pray for us, that we may remain strong in our Catholic faith, courageously share the Gospel with the world, and always seek peace, unity, and holiness in Christ. Amen.
