On May 27, the Catholic Church honors Saint Augustine of Canterbury, a missionary bishop who helped bring Christianity to England and played an important role in the growth of the Church.
Saint Augustine was a Benedictine monk living in Rome when Pope Gregory the Great sent him and several monks to England in the sixth century to preach the Gospel to the Anglo-Saxon people.
Although Augustine initially feared the difficult mission ahead, he trusted God and continued the journey. Upon arriving in England, he preached with humility, patience, and faith. Through his missionary work, many people converted to Christianity, including King Ethelbert of Kent.
Augustine later became the first Archbishop of Canterbury and helped establish churches, monasteries, and Christian communities throughout the region.
Saint Augustine of Canterbury is remembered for his courage, missionary spirit, and obedience to God’s call. His life reminds us that even when we feel weak or afraid, God can use us to bring His light to others.
Prayer
Saint Augustine of Canterbury, faithful missionary and servant of Christ, pray for us, that we may courageously share our Catholic faith, trust God in every mission He gives us, and help lead others closer to Jesus. Amen.
