Day 3: 40 Days of Lent 2026

Reflection: The Heart of True Fasting

On this first Friday of Lent, as we abstain from meat and perhaps feel the gentle pull of hunger or self-denial, the Lord speaks clearly through Isaiah: “Is this the manner of fasting I would choose… to bow one’s head like a reed, and lie upon sackcloth and ashes? Is this what you call a fast, a day acceptable to the Lord?” (Isaiah 58:5).

God calls us beyond mere physical sacrifice to something deeper—healing, liberation, sharing our bread with the hungry, clothing the naked, and letting our light shine in darkness. In the Gospel, Jesus explains that His disciples do not fast while the bridegroom is with them, but the time will come when they will.

That time is now in Lent—we fast in longing for Christ, preparing our hearts for the joy of Easter. True fasting empties us so God can fill us; it breaks chains of selfishness and opens us to love others as He loves us.

As we journey these early days of Lent, let this Friday remind us: our small acts of penance are not punishments but loving offerings. They draw us closer to Jesus, who fasted in the desert for us. May our hunger today become hunger for holiness, our restraint become generosity, and our prayer become a cry for God’s mercy.

Prayer for Day 3 of Lent

Heavenly Father,
You who see into the hidden places of our hearts, we come before You on this Friday after Ash Wednesday, humbled by our weakness and grateful for Your endless mercy.

Lord Jesus, teach us the true spirit of fasting—not for show or self-righteousness, but to loosen the bonds of injustice, to share with those in need, and to draw near to You with sincere hearts. As we abstain today, let our emptiness be filled with Your presence. Convert our selfish desires into acts of compassion and love.

Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of true repentance. Like the Psalmist, we cry out: “Have mercy on me, O God, in Your goodness; in the greatness of Your compassion wipe out my offense” (Psalm 51:3). Wash us clean, renew our spirits, and make us instruments of Your light in a world that needs healing.

Mary, Mother of Mercy and model of humble obedience, intercede for us during this holy season. Help us to say “yes” to God’s will, even when it calls us to sacrifice.

We offer this day to You, Lord—our prayers, our fasting, our small acts of charity. May they unite us more deeply to the sacrifice of Your Son, and prepare us for the glory of Easter.

Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

May this day bring you closer to the Lord. Keep going—Lent is a journey of grace. God bless you
