As Philip Rivers begins his return to the NFL at age 44, signing with the Indianapolis Colts, one of the most moving parts of the longtime quarterback’s story has been that of his love for his wife, Tiffany Rivers, who has been central to his football journey from the very beginning.
Tiffany Goodwin met Philip Rivers when they were growing up in northern Alabama, where Catholics were a small minority. In a 2016 interview with The Chastity Project, Rivers recalled the moment he noticed Tiffany and being struck by her character and faith, saying she was “centered on faith and Christ” and had the values he was looking for. Their relationship developed through middle school and high school before the couple decided to attend North Carolina State University together, according to People.
Although Philip was raised Catholic, Tiffany was not. She converted to Catholicism just before their wedding, entering the Church the day before they were married in 2001, while both were still college students. Tiffany was 18 years old, and Philip was 19.
Tiffany became a mother early in the marriage. The couple welcomed their first child in 2002, while Philip was still in college and Tiffany was balancing her studies with work at a daycare, according to People. They now have 10 children. Their youngest son, Andrew, was born in October 2023.
On the “Saints in the Parish” podcast, Rivers spoke about Tiffany’s visible presence during his playing career, particularly when she brought their children to visit him while he was in the NFL. He recalled teammates commenting on the impact of seeing their family life firsthand and how they witnessed a 2-year-old, 4-year-old, 6-year-old, and 8-year-old “running around and Tiffany coming in carrying one and then running and playing and laughing,” Rivers said, adding that teammates described the experience as “joyful and happy” and unexpectedly meaningful.
Rivers has also spoken publicly about the couple’s openness to life within their marriage, a posture he connects directly to their Catholic faith. On the podcast, he explained that they never planned a specific family size, saying, “For us, really, people say, ‘Did you always want 10 children?’ … and it’s really like, ‘I don’t know, just open to what (ever).’”
He linked that openness to obedience within marriage and faith practice, noting that over time they have seen what he described as its fruits, including grandchildren. The Rivers’ youngest son and his grandson are nearly the same age, born one year apart.
On the podcast, he said Tiffany often leads practices such as family rosaries and a “prayer jar,” from which the children draw intentions to pray together .
Beyond her role as wife and mother, Tiffany Rivers has pursued work that reflects her Catholic values. She co-founded Hermoza, a swimwear line created to offer functional, modest designs that emphasize dignity rather than sexualization. She has also been deeply involved in philanthropy. In 2009, Philip and Tiffany launched the Rivers of Hope Foundation, which raised more than $1 million to support foster and orphaned children, before they transitioned to more private efforts. The couple continues to support initiatives such as the Rivers of Hope Birthday Club and Camp Connect, which reunites siblings separated in foster care.
In one podcast episode, Rivers said of his marriage to Tiffany, “We’re best friends, and that certainly is awesome being married to your best friend.”
