Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Feast Day: August 15
Solemnity & Holy Day of Obligation

The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the most beautiful and ancient beliefs of the Catholic Church. It teaches that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was taken body and soul into Heaven at the end of her earthly life.

What Does the Assumption Mean?

The Church believes that because of Mary’s sinless life and her unique role in salvation history, God did not allow her body to see decay. Instead, He assumed her—body and soul—into heavenly glory, where she reigns as Queen of Heaven.

This truth was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII in 1950, but it has been believed by Christians since the early centuries of the Church.

Why It Matters

Mary’s Assumption is a sign of hope for all believers. It shows us:

  • The destiny of those who follow Christ—to share in His resurrection.
  • That death is not the end, but a passage to eternal life.
  • Mary’s powerful role as our intercessor and mother in Heaven.

 How Catholics Celebrate

  • Attend Mass on August 15 (a Holy Day of Obligation in many countries).
  • Pray the Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary.
  • Begin or conclude a Novena to the Assumption (August 6–14 or ending on August 15).

 Prayer for the Assumption

O Mary, assumed into Heaven, you shine as Queen and Mother of all. Pray for us, that we may follow your example of faith and love, and one day share in the glory of your Son’s resurrection.
Amen.
