Martyr and Patron Saint of Physicians
About St. Pantaleon
St. Pantaleon was a physician and Christian martyr who lived in the late 3rd and early 4th century in Nicomedia(modern-day Turkey). He studied medicine as a young man and became renowned for his healing skills. According to tradition, he was the personal doctor of the Emperor Maximian.
Though raised a Christian, Pantaleon fell away from the faith for a time, influenced by the secular world. However, he returned to Christ through the guidance of a holy priest and began to practice medicine not for profit, but out of charity, healing many in Christ’s name. He became known as a “wonder-working doctor.”
Because of his Christian faith, Pantaleon was arrested during the Diocletian persecution. He courageously refused to renounce Christ and suffered torture and martyrdom around the year 305 A.D.
St. Pantaleon is venerated as one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, saints especially invoked in times of illness and need. He is the patron saint of physicians, midwives, and all who care for the sick.
